Have you ever noticed that we only protect marine life we can see? - Creatures like whales, dolphins and turtles. Unfortunately, most marine life remains hidden, out of sight and very much out of luck.
The fact that we can't see beneath the waves is the biggest threat facing the oceans and why so many marine species are in serious trouble. Pollution, unsustainable fishing and global warming are all taking their toll - large fish populations are down to their last 10% worldwide and that's just one of the issues.
If we could only see underwater without getting wet, we would notice the issues, we would care and we would do so much more to protect our oceans.
So we've decided to do something about it. We're inventing new ways for people to see underwater. We're using the latest technology to develop tools to reveal our oceans - tools such as Underwater GPS Photography and FISHEYE video.
And we want everyone to see what we reveal, so we've recruited help from Australia's best communication experts to develop a website and programme that can be duplicated on a local, regional and national basis.
So why are we starting in Sydney? Sydney has better marine life than any other city on the planet but very few people have any idea. So where better to start? And if we can’t look after what’s on our own doorstep, there’s little hope of us looking after the rest of the underwater world.
We want you to fall in love with Underwater Sydney, be inspired by it and help us protect it.
Underwater Sydney is a project of Underwater Earth – a not-for-profit organisation based in Australia.
