White's Seahorse

Sydney is arguably the easiest place in the world to see a seahorse in the wild. You can jump off a plane, put on a snorkel and mask and be face to face with one within the hour.

The most interesting fact about the seahorse is that they are one of the few creatures in the world where the male gets pregnant. The female hands over the eggs as soon as they're produced and lets the male look after them in his pouch. She then leaves him and heads off to have fun, only to return when the babies have been born.

Then with a flash of her big eyes and a wiggle of her tail, the cycle continues and the poor male is pregnant again. Life can be tough for blokes underwater.

White's Seahorse is by far the most common seahorse in Sydney.
