Potbellied Seahorse

The Ancient Greeks believed that seahorses were the babies of the sea monsters that pulled Poseidon’s chariot across the Ocean. This is why Seahorses were given the scientific name of Hippocampus which literally means horse-seamonster.

It’s rather fortunate that the Ancient Greeks were wrong and seahorses don’t grow up into big scary monsters – Sydney Harbour is full of them.

There are two species of Seahorse in Sydney - the Potbellied Seahorse and White's Seahorse. With its big belly, we think it is pretty obvious which one this one is.
