Pygmy Pipehorse

The Sydney Pygmy Pipehorse is as small as its name suggests. Its only about 4cm long, which is about a third of the size of their tropical relatives.

Fortunately size isn’t important if you’re a pygmy pipehorse. In fact, it’s probably better to be small as it makes you almost impossible to spot. Humans didn’t spot one until 1997. That’s when they were discovered for the first time by a diver in Sydney.

The species was named Idiotropiscis Lumnitzeri after the diver, Akos Lumnitzer – although we are not too sure where the ‘Idiot’ part came from. That seems a little harsh.
