Striped Anglerfish

To win the world speed eating championship you need to eat big and eat fast – and no creature on earth can compete with the angler fish.

Female angler fish can eat a meal twice their size in one huge split-second gulp. That’s the equivalent to a human eating about 750 hamburgers.  The current human record according to the International Federation of Competitive Eating (yes it exists!) is 11 in 10 minutes.

Despite her portly appearance, when she goes for a bite, it’s just about the fastest motion in the ocean – she lunges at her food with an ’elastic’ mouth and body that allows her to swallow a fish much larger than herself.

This region of Australia is one of the only places in the world where angler fish are found in shallow water, and Sydney is possibly the easiest place in the world to encounter one.
