Southern Calamari

The Italian word ‘calamari’ means ‘cooked squid’. So, understandably, there was uproar in the Sydney squid community when the naming guy decided to call the main local species ‘Southern Calamari.’ It’s like calling a breed of cows ‘Roast Beef’.

The trouble is, everyone loves calamari… and that includes squid!  Whenever there’s not enough food to go around, they get out the salt and pepper and start eating each other.

As the oceans heat up due to global warming, the number of squid is likely to explode – they’re one of the few species who benefit from warmer water. So, with more squid in the ocean, and less food for them to eat, squid may soon be having calamari for dinner most nights.
