Yellowfin Scorpionfish

On first impression, the yellowfin scorpionfish seems to have a spectacularly bad name. It’s related to the stonefish, the world’s most venomous fish and is perfectly camouflaged with not a spot of yellow in sight.

Its distinct yellow colouring is actually hidden on the underside of its fins – a secret fashion statement, like fluorescent underpants, that they flash to unsuspecting passers by.

The flashing is meant to be a warning and it seems to work, no one appears to know just how venomous they are, including us. We got a quick flash when we spotted this one in Sydney Harbour and, although it was the first ever sighting of the fish in this region, we decided not to give it a big welcome hug.
